Eliminate The Stigma CBD Scholarship

Annual CBD Scholarship

Only a handful of topics in this country are more polarized than views over cannabis and CBD. CBD is hailed by many to be a miracle cure nowadays. CBD has helped some cope with stress and anxiety, while also helping others manage certain seizure disorders and a slew of other conditions. Nevertheless, there are still many Americans that aren’t so hot on CBD oil. The Department of Defense has reiterated that CBD oil is off-limits for active service members in the military. Certain schools and school districts have banned CBD on their grounds and some workplaces have even fired employees for CBD use.

The intense negative stigma attached to CBD is largely due to the fact that CBD is derived from plants in the cannabis family. CBD has been associated with marijuana, which many people know gets you high and is still illegal in many states. Some have judged and pigeonholed CBD users as “stoners”. However, CBD oil can be extracted from both hemp and marijuana. Hemp does not contain enough THC to get an individual high and therefore allows individuals to receive the benefits of CBD for the endocannabinoid system without the psychoactive effects.

At Green Wellness Life, we witness the benefits of CBD oil every day. Some of our staff members use CBD to manage their pain and customers regularly will tell us how CBD has helped them live a better life. It’s a shame there is still a stigma attached to CBD and we want to work to eliminate that by partnering with students for our annual Eliminate the Stigma Scholarship.

Eliminate The Stigma Scholarship Overview

The Eliminate the Stigma Scholarship is a $1,000 annual scholarship designed to promote healthy conversation and reflection around CBD oil. Meet Our 2022 Scholarship Winner – Amelia Taggart

Our 2022 annual Eliminate The Stigma scholarship recipient this year is Amilia Taggart. Amelia is a Biology major at Great Bay Community College and she is expected to graduate in May of 2023.

Amelia's application was a poem she wrote about her struggles with Insomnia and the relief that CBD could provide for her. Her poem has several sources cited and has a beautiful cadence that really emphasizes her personal experience. With her application she wrote a few sentences about trying to help persuade her mother, who also struggles with sleep, to overcome her CBD stigma and try CBD to help her sleep. Her writing clearly illustrates how a 0 THC CBD tincture helped calm her mind and allowed her to have a more restful night's sleep.

It was through Amelia's own independent research that she was able to find a more holistic sollution to her restless nights. Take the time to read Amelia's poem here and check out what she has to say about CBD and sleep.

Meet Our 2021 Scholarship Winner – Anna Shellman

Our 2021 annual Eliminate The Stigma scholarship recipient is Anna Shellman. Anna is a sophomore at the University of Connecticut where she is working to get a bachelors in allied health sciences. After earning her undergraduate degree, Anna plans to continue her education in medical school to become a doctor.

Anna wrote a wonderful essay about her experiences with CBD. Anna took a job working at a local CBD store. As a pre-med student, she went into the position with some bias. Anna was a strong advocate for modern medicine and she believed anything created in a lab was the best possible solution. Anna thought of CBD as a less potent alternative to Marijuana and a less effective alternative to pharmaceuticals.

Through her job, Anna was able to learn more about CBD and hear experiences from customers. One customer’s dog was able to eliminate a limp with the help of a CBD tincture while another customer was relieved of pain that would normally keep her confined to a chair for most of the day. Anna was able to collect a countless number of stories attesting to the benefits of CBD.

Anna is now a firm believer in the benefits CBD can provide. In her future medical career, Anna wants to work to recommend CBD to patients and advocate for CBD to be covered under health insurance. You can read Anna’s full story here

Meet Our 2020 Scholarship Winner – Maribel Moreno

Maribel Moreno

Green Wellness Life is proud to announce the winner of the 2020 Eliminate The Stigma CBD Scholarship: Maribel Moreno. Maribel is a biological sciences major studying at The University of Texas at El Paso. Maribel is the vice president of the women’s rugby team at U of T El Paso and also works part-time as a tutor for children who have suffered from violent or sexual abuse.

Maribel wrote and recorded her own poem advocating for CBD for stress and anxiety reduction. In the poem, Maribel talks about the anxiety she used to feel when flying in planes. She asks her mom about using CBD, but her mom quickly dismisses the idea. When Maribel finally decides to try CBD, her anxiety disappears. Maribel touches on a very relatable subject in her poem, as many of us who regularly work CBD into our daily routine have likely received judgement or criticism from family members.

The entire staff at Green Wellness Life was blown away by Maribel’s heartfelt and touching submission. The voice recording communicated an extremely powerful message, but the painting created to supplement the recording further demonstrated Maribel’s multifaceted talent. You can view Maribel’s poem and listen to the recording below.
